Elizabeth Palot Sampler, 1811

embroidery Gift of the London Public Library, 1964

Response

Elisabeth put a lot of time and care into her needlework. The sampler shows the importance of her faith and religion.

I read Little House on the Prairie books, I think it would be interesting to live in pioneer times. It’s closer to nature and outdoors.

I like to sew. If I were alive in 1811, I would like to make something like that. I would feel proud if people 200 years in the future were looking at my creations.

Lyla Wheeler is a Grade 5 student at West Oaks French Immersion school. In 2019 she petitioned City Council to to change the slavery-associated name of her London street, Plantation Road. Council responded by voting, in 2020, to review the policy for changing street names. Lyla loves to swim, dance, sew, read and spend time with her animals. she hopes that we will have more equality and inclusiveness in the world in the future, and she will continue to fight for it!
